Pryor Cashman Honored by the Uniformed Fire Officers Association for 9-11 Help

The Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA) honored Pryor Cashman Sherman & Flynn LLP on May 8, 2002, for its assistance after the events of  9-11. The UFOA is the labor organization representing the 2,500 supervisory officers in the New York City Fire Department. On 9-11, it lost 83 of its members.

When the association lost the use of its offices on lower Broadway because of the interruption of electrical and telephone service and other damage, Pryor Cashman, which has represented the UFOA for almost 20 years, set up offices, telephones and other services for the association at our Park Avenue offices. Just two days later, by September 13, the association and its staff were operating again, dealing with the families of its lost members and coordinating communications and financial assistance in the chaotic period following 9-11.

In addition to the office facilities, the lawyers at Pryor Cashman volunteered various services on behalf of the families of lost fire officers. They helped structure the 911 Fund with the International Association of Firefighters, which raised more than $100 million. Attorneys at the firm continue to assist survivors with estate planning and other legal matters arising from the disaster.

Peter Gorman, president of the Fire Officers Association, presented Ronald Shechtman, the head of the Labor and Employment Group at Pryor Cashman, with a plaque "in grateful recognition for the services provided to the families of our fallen Fire Officers of September 11, 2001." The plaque also reads: "Your heartfelt caring and assistance in our time of need is deeply appreciated."
