Pryor Cashman Litigation partners James Janowitz and William Charron gave a presentation on November 11, 2008 to the Art Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association regarding their recent trial victory before a federal court in Manhattan in the matter of Bakalar v. Vavra.

Janowitz and Charron successfully represented the current owner of art (a drawing by Egon Schiele) that was alleged without sufficient basis to have been stolen by the Nazis. Before a group of about 40 Art Law Committee members and guests, they discussed the facts of the case and an important choice of law question that was the subject of a pre-trial ruling by the Court. The case was recently appealed to the U.S. Appeals Court for the Second Circuit, where Pryor Cashman will once again be representing.

The case has been the subject of numerous articles in the press, including one in the current edition of Art News. To read this article, please click here.
