Partner Robert Ray’s Role In Resolution Of President Clinton Issues Noted On Chris Matthews Hardball
MSNBC - Chris Matthews HardballOn the March 18, 2010 edition of MSNBC’s Hardball, Chris Matthews interviewed author Ken Gormley, whose book The Death of American Virtue, was recently published. During the program, Gormley praised Pryor Cashman Partner Robert Ray, stating:
"[T]his wasn’t really made public as much as it should have been, but there was a carefully crafted deal not to indict President Clinton just as he’s walking out the door of the White House. And Robert Ray, who took over from Ken Starr, sat down with President Clinton one-on-one and told him he had to resolve all these issues, which led to suspension of his bar license in Arkansas, paying a $25,000 fine for contempt in the civil case and also making the statement that he had walked this fine line [but nevertheless had made false statements]. Now notice that he [President Clinton] never says that he intentionally lied under oath and committed a crime…. You have to give Robert Ray a lot of credit for this, and he really has never received credit. He figured out a solution that was good for the country here; [and] he got an admission."
Ray joined the Independent Counsel’s office in Washington, D.C. in 1995 and succeeded Kenneth Starr as Independent Counsel in October 1999. While Independent Counsel, Ray was responsible for, among other things, the In re Madison Guaranty investigations, which concluded with published final reports on matters involving FBI files, the White House Travel Office, Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky.
