Judith Poller, Co-Chair of Pryor Cashman’s Family Law Group, was a panelist at the “Extraordinary Issues for Extraordinary Kids: A Primer on the Issues Involved When Confronted With Special Needs Children in Divorce” event, sponsored by the Matrimonial Law Committee of the New York City Bar and the New York State Women’s Bar Association, and held Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at the NYC Bar.
The program addressed the unique financial and parenting issues presented when confronted with a special needs case. The panel discussed some of the following topics:
- Evaluation of a special needs case
- Quantifying, evaluating and illustrating special needs opportunities
- Relevant terms and statues
- Government benefits and outside funding sources available for special needs cases and the steps needed to preserve those benefits
- Health and life insurance, guardianship issues, and supplemental needs trusts.
The panel also further explored parenting, custody and time-sharing issues specific to children with special needs and special talents.
