a “best law firm”

We are creators, supporters, protectors and connectors.

We see the world beyond law.

"Pryor Cashman is people. Dedicated people. Collegial people. Bright people. Exceptional people. People of many different backgrounds and many different personalities. This is the way it has been since 1963 and this is the way it is today. Working together, we have created a great law firm,  a source of pride to all of us - characterized always by a spirit of cooperation and kinship.

For me personally, it is that continuing personality of the firm that has made coming to work for 50 years a privilege and a great delight."

- Gideon Cashman, Chairman

Supporters

We support our attorneys in stepping up for leadership roles in charitable, cultural and civic organizations in their own communities and in those communities with the greatest need for volunteer and pro bono legal services. We are a proud member of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, which refers pro bono matters to our attorneys in diverse practice areas, including both litigation and non-litigation matters.

Knowledgeable and savvy, our award-winning Family Law Group offers clarity and stability in times of family crisis. With skilled settlement and negotiation capabilities, as well as extensive trial and appellate court experience, our family law attorneys are problem solvers equipped with all the tools to guide a successful outcome when clients need it most.

The Family Law Group includes some of New York City’s most prominent matrimonial attorneys. Tireless advocates, our attorneys combine compassion with the strong, steady counsel needed through the entire legal process.

Our Intellectual Property Litigation practice has won seminal trademark and copyright cases for media giants, international celebrities and major corporations such as EMI Music Publishing, Lion's Gate Entertainment, Lady Gaga, Richemont and Honda.

Some of our cases  have become the “gold standard” for addressing conflicts between IP rights and the First Amendment. Our Digital Media Group has been especially instrumental and establishing the boundary of liability regarding the reproduction and distribution of copyrighted content via new digital platforms.

Our lawyers actively nurture entrepreneurs from the start of their new ventures - advising them on various business structures and implementing their choices, acquiring rights to core technologies and connecting them with potential funding sources such as angel investors, institutional investors, and corporate venture arms. We shepherd them through transactions, ensure they’re protecting critical innovations, and help them to secure the best minds and talent.

Pryor Cashman supports local investor groups and hosts training and coaching programs for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly in life sciences, healthcare and technology, helping to build a platform for entrepreneurship and venture creation in New York City.

"We have grown steadily over the years, adding new lawyers and creating new practice areas. During that time, we have always stayed true to our most core values – to strive to be the best, not the biggest firm; to foster a culture that respects individuality and encourages innovation; and to practice with sound judgment and common sense."

 - Ron Shechtman, Managing Partner

Pryor Cashman offers clients comprehensive guidance on all aspects of cross-border transactions, business operations and management. We counsel clients as they secure capital, grow their businesses across national boundaries and enter global markets.

Many of our lawyers speak our clients’ native languages, some studied law abroad and are admitted to practice abroad, and others lived or worked abroad. This enables us to anticipate, identify and overcome cultural differences and communication obstacles that can impact how smoothly and efficiently deals are negotiated and disputes resolved.

A Passion for Business

"Taking the time to delve into a client’s business and industry is essential for any lawyer to successfully advocate on behalf of a client.  We are fortunate to be located in New York City, a vibrant intersection of the finance, entertainment, media, technology and culinary worlds, and there is no doubt that our team here reflects wide-ranging experience in these industries.  It is exciting to be a part of a team of lawyers who are so invested in and passionate about our clients’ businesses."

Mentors

Pryor Cashman supports the Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School, a school serving low-income and minority youth in Brooklyn, NY. Through the school’s Corporate Work Study Program, students work full-time one day a week where they gain real world experience and connect with professional role models. The other four days are packed with challenging schoolwork - including two sections of Math and English each day. The income they earn through the work/study program is disbursed directly to the school, defraying 60% of the student’s education cost.  Each year Pryor Cashman employs five of the school’s students as interns.

“At a time when dropout rates among low-income urban high school students are alarmingly high, Pryor Cashman decided to be part of the solution,” said Eric Hellige, chair of the Corporate Group and a board member of the school. “The Cristo Rey program clearly works - 100% of the school’s first senior class graduated last year and were offered opportunities to pursue advanced degrees, with an average of six college acceptances each.”

"My experience as a summer associate at Pryor Cashman gave me a real sense of what it is like to actually practice law. I learned not only the mechanics of how to litigate a case, but I also learned about managing the various relationships necessary in the practice of law, with clients, colleagues, the court and adversaries. Being a summer associate was an invaluably helpful bridge from my student life to my professional life and enabled me to make an educated decision about what course to take after graduation."
