Patent Law for Non-Patent Lawyers

James Klaiber, member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group, was a speaker at the New York City Bar Association’s Continuing Legal Education event “Patent Law for Non-Patent Lawyers,” held Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m., at the NYC Bar Association.

This CLE program introduced the non-practitioner to some basic patent law concepts, including:

  • the differences between patents and copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets;
  • why patents are valuable;
  • how to read and understand a patent;
  • how to translate an idea into a patent;
  • the meaning of patent infringement, invalidity and unenforceability,
  • and how patent litigation differs from other types of litigation.

Key aspects of the America Invents Act was also discussed.

Klaiber, who is experienced in all aspects of patent law, including transactions, litigation and client counseling, spoke on the topic of “The History and Structure of the Patent System.”
