Intellectual Property Partner Andrew Langsam, Chairman of Pryor Cashman’s Patent Group, presented a 90-minute Intellectual Property seminar at Gotham City Networking on February 28, 2008. The Gotham City Networking series of seminars bring together people from a wide variety of businesses and professions.

In his IP seminar, Langsam summarized the nature and necessity of trademarks, copyrights and patents, along with issues surrounding their potential infringement, with, as one attendee noted, “the ease and facility of the most relaxed and knowledgeable of college professors who was obviously comfortable and highly trained in the area of IP law.  His presentation, filled with handouts, objects and even a few toys for us to play with was peppered with many relevant examples, illustrations and many opportunities for questions and audience participation.”

On the subject of trademarks, Langsam discussed the different types of trademarks available, including names, symbols, sounds (such as the famous NBC TV three tones), logos and even colors and slogans (“you've come a long way, baby”) and emphasized the importance of both use and registration. Also covered by Langsam was “likelihood of confusion” and the factors that determine whether such a likelihood exists. Langsam closed his discussion of trademarks by discussing “distinctive” trademarks, length of registration and renewal.

Langsam then moved to copyrights, examining their origin, purpose and scope of protection, also discussing copyright infringement and the elements required to prove it. He closed his seminar by discussing patents, explaining the subject matter covered by patents and the factors necessary to obtain one.

Langsam’s seminar was well-received by the attendees, with one noting that “I would definitely commend Andy Langsam for providing an IP seminar that was most assuredly ‘cool’ and had a 100% ‘wow’ response from all the attendees.  Thanks again, Andy for a terrific job.”
