Partner Jeffrey Johnson, a member of Pryor Cashman’s Intellectual Property Group, was interviewed by MSN for its October 5, 2010 article, “Don’t Be Like Facebook: Make Your Privacy Policies Clear and Respectful.”

The article by Joanna L. Krotz discusses how Facebook set off a firestorm by its launch last spring of an “innovation” that allowed other selected websites to post the personal views of its members without their explicit consent. The public was outraged and Facebook lost many users and accounts. Although Facebook quickly deleted the new feature, Krotz notes that the company is still playing defense when it comes to its privacy policies and settings.

Johnson told MSN that puncturing customer confidence in your ability or willingness to safeguard personal data can lead to troubling consequences. “It can hurt your reputation and cut into your revenues. It can quickly circulate to a large segment of your customer base.”
