Protecting Emmy-Nominated Films for Jigsaw Productions
Counsel Robert Stein, the leader of Pryor Cashman’s Publishing practice and a member of the firm’s Media & Entertainment and Intellectual Property Groups, regularly represents producers in the pre-release review of screenplays and documentary films. Stein also assists insurers in determining whether various motion picture and television productions can be insured and makes recommendations to underwriters regarding coverage exclusions and special deductibles for E&O (Errors & Omissions) policies.
Stein recently acted as E&O Counsel for Jigsaw Productions on two documentaries which appeared on HBO and received a total of eight Emmy Award nominations:
- “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” which provided an in-depth look at the inner-workings of the Church of Scientology and received seven Emmy nominations; and
- “Sinatra: All or Nothing At All,” about the life of the legendary Frank Sinatra, which received one nomination.
On September 20, 2015, the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held and Jigsaw Productions received three Emmy awards for “Going Clear,” including for best documentary or non-fiction special and writing and directing for non-fiction programming.
Other new and widely-anticipated documentaries which Stein has acted as counsel on include:
- “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine”, a look at the personal and private life of the late Apple CEO, Steve Jobs
- “Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown,” about the Godfather of Soul.
