The article discusses challenges faced by shared accommodation company Airbnb’s over its valuation and alleged tax avoidance. Compared to similar lodging enterprises valued at $2 billion, Airbnb’s recent valuation of $10 billion is arguably a bit high. Recent investigations by regulators in New York and San Francisco into Airbnb’s sidestepping of hospitality taxes may significantly affect valuations. According to deBrauwere, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is not focusing on mom-and-pop hosts, instead he is targeting large real estate companies that may lack proper insurance or procedures for fire safety, zoning, noise or nuisance.
