While providing a deeply personal service to family and friends of the departed, cemeteries must also make complex business decisions, manage employees and comply with strict regulations.

Pryor Cashman has represented major New York metropolitan cemeteries since the early 1960s, accumulating vast experience with issues affecting both religious and secular burial societies. Acting as general counsel, we provide cemeteries with practical advice that reflects a comprehensive understanding of the industry and the laws that give it structure. Shouldering the complexities of these legal issues leaves cemetery operators free to focus on the more sensitive services they provide their clients.

What We Do

Attorneys in our Cemetery Law practice oversee matters including family and burial society disputes, cemetery mergers, and legislative initiatives. We advise clients on compliance with New York’s Not-for-Profit Corporation Law and Religious Corporations Law, and even serve on the boards of several New York cemeteries.

Pryor Cashman acts as counsel for the Cemetery Employer Association - a collective bargaining representative of many New York cemeteries - as well as cemetery benefit funds, such as the Cemetery Employer Association Union Pension Plan and the Cemetery Workers Supplemental Pension Fund. We have extensive experience in all aspects of labor-management relations, including pension and welfare fund issues, grievance arbitrations, and collective bargaining negotiations.
