Partner Joshua Zuckerberg Speaks to Monster.com About Employment Contracts
Partner Joshua Zuckerberg, a member of Pryor Cashman’s Labor and Employment Group, was interviewed by Monster.com for its January 10, 2011 article “10 Considerations Before Signing an Employment Contract.”
The article discusses ten critical aspects of employment contracts that prospective employees should consider before signing any agreement.
As a threshold matter, Zuckerberg told Monster.com that protection from involuntary termination is not automatic. “You need to ask, ‘Am I getting any job security with this agreement?’”
On the issue of copyrights, inventions and the like, such as “that brilliant invention in your garage that’s nearly complete when you sign with a new employer,” Zuckerberg says “you might want to highlight anything you’re already working on, and carve that out.”
Finally, Zuckerberg recommends challenging the terms of an uncertain contract, stating “nine times out of 10, it’s worth asking about stuff you have doubts about.”
