Pryor Cashman Partner Ronald Shechtman, the firm's current Managing Partner, chair of the Labor + Employment Group, and co-chair of the Labor-Management Relations Practice, was interviewed by Law360 Pulse about stepping down as Managing Partner after 17 years. He reflected on the firm’s growth, commitment to its identity, and entrepreneurial culture, while also offering advice to younger attorneys on leadership and looking forward to more personal time.

In Pryor Cashman’s Outgoing Head Talks Legacy,” Ronald shared lessons he’s learned during his tenure as Managing Partner:

"I think the lesson was to be faithful to our identity and not try to create a model that is inconsistent with our strengths and our standards. I think that there are lessons out there of midsize firms that ran into trouble in trying to be or aspiring to be what they are not and could not be.

He also discusses the firm's dramatic growth over the past 17 years:

“Our growth has been dramatic. We've doubled our size in terms of number of attorneys. Revenues have gone up about 300%, and our profit by even more.

We've also created new practice groups in the course of my tenure: family law, where we have one of the most distinguished groups in that area; corporate immigration, where we represent most of the major sports leagues and similar clientele. We've built a trust and estates practice that I think again has gained preeminence with leading practitioners, and in the last five or six years, an art law practice that now has five or six attorneys, including leaders in that field.

[…] And this is a firm that keeps getting younger. We have had enormous success with lateral recruitment, and have high retention rate at every level of our firm, from mail room to senior partners. Most people here are long term.”
