Pryor Cashman Client Wins Dismissal of Claims to Prohibit Auction of ‘Wizard of Oz’ Dress

The US District Court for the Southern District of New York granted a motion to dismiss claims against Pryor Cashman client Bonhams & Butterfields Auctioneers Corp., finding that the plaintiff did not have standing to contest the ownership of a dress worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.
Bonhams had been engaged to auction the dress in 2022 by its owner, co-defendant The Catholic University of America.
The blue-and-white dress worn by Garland in the 1939 movie is expected to bring as much as $1.2 million at auction, according to the filed complaint.
Bonhams & Butterfields was represented by Pryor Cashman Partner Ross Bagley and Associate John Kilgard.
