Preparing for Possible Travel Bans and Consular Closures
Press and media have reported over the past few days the possibility of new immigration actions that could impact international travel of nonimmigrants. Specifically, Reuters published an article warning of a potential travel ban for citizens of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Other countries that may be subject to a possible travel ban could include Sudan, Venezuela, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Iran, Libya, Cuba and North Korea. The New York Times reported a proposal to close a dozen consular posts, mainly in Western Europe. At this time, these reports have not been confirmed publicly by the U.S. Department of State or the White House.
Nonetheless, individuals who could potentially be subject to an eventual travel ban and who are temporarily abroad may wish to consider an immediate return to the United States. Employers may also wish to vet any anticipated business travel for employees from certain countries and warn such employees to carefully consider any future international travel plans. Furthermore, while media reports of consular closures do not list visa-issuing consular posts, employers may wish to plan for increased delays in visa issuance, especially for individuals renewing visas in Western Europe.
Pryor Cashman LLP continues to monitor these ongoing reports. Should you have any questions, please reach out to your immigration contact at our firm.
