Finguerra-DuCharme Comments on the Evolution of the Metaverse
Pryor Cashman Partner Dyan Finguerra-DuCharme, who serves as Co-Chair of the Intellectual Property Group, spoke with Managing IP to discuss the rise and fall of the metaverse over the last few years, as metaverse-related trademark applications and other inquiries have begun to decrease.
In “Remember the Metaverse? Practitioners Discuss its Rise and Fall,” Dyan commented on how there was a “big rush” a few years ago. She shared that:
“A lot of brands have procured registrations in the space they wanted to be in related to the metaverse. We don’t see as many new applications coming in,” adding that “traditional registrations in class 9 (which includes downloadable software) and class 42 (which includes non-downloadable software) covered many companies’ metaverse-related needs anyway…[I]n the world of trademarks, it matters whether the goods or services are related. They don’t need to be identical.”
The article also discusses the recent rise in AI, with Dyan noting:
“That’s where I’m seeing big interest, and so I think that’s where we’re heading now. In this changing world of technology, it seems we started with the metaverse and now we’re taking the next step into AI.”
