Pulman Comments on AI Issue in Hollywood Actors’ Strike

Pryor Cashman Partner Simon Pulman, co-chair of the Media + Entertainment and Film, TV + Podcast Groups, spoke with Variety about artificial intelligence (AI) issues that are key sticking points in the SAG-AFTRA strike that has brought Hollywood productions to a standstill.

In “SAG-AFTRA Strike: AI Fears Mount for Background Actors,” Simon weighs in on moves that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has been making toward taking digital scans of background actors and other performers for possible AI-generated images and performances in the future, and what contract language might be needed to address the rights of the studios and the performers:

Simon Pulman, a partner at Pryor Cashman, said that to resolve the issue, the sides will have to have a more nuanced conversation.

“What rights do the AMPTP companies actually need?” he asked. “They’re going to have to actually talk about the use cases.”
