Partner Eric Hellige, chair of Pryor Cashman’s Corporate Group, was interviewed by popular sports blog Deadspin for its June 14, 2012 article “Company Paid To Monitor College Athletes’ Twitter And Facebook Accounts Has A Sock-Puppet Business Address IRL.”

The article discusses allegations that Varsity Monitor, a company colleges use to monitor their athletes on Facebook and Twitter, is conducting business in violation of state law. According to the article, Varsity Monitor – which has deals with North Carolina, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, and Villanova, among other schools – exists as a Delaware limited liability company, yet has its office in New York and collects invoices via New Jersey, despite not being registered to do business in either state.

Hellige, who has more than 30 years of experience in general corporate representation, told the website that Varsity Monitor probably is not in violation of New York state law because it appears the firm did no actual business in New York.
