Partner Richard M. Betheil, a member of Pryor Cashman’s Labor & Employment Group, was quoted in The Atlantic article entitled “Shopping for Secondhand Graves on Craigslist.”
Burial plot owners are increasingly selling their plots online on websites such as Craigslist. A variety of reasons motivate people to sell, including financial hardship, relocation, changes in family relations, and profit potential. But is selling graves legal?
If adhering to the cemetery rules, “any of these individuals can act as they are doing," says Betheil. “However, it’s equally clear that there has been a substantial market for graves made improperly. The cemeteries find it very difficult to police this.”
