Partner Robert J. deBrauwere will be speaking at Fordham Media and Entertainment Law Society's Seventh Annual Media & Entertainment Law Symposium. He will be participating in a panel titled, "Who's Steering the Ship: Social Media or Us?" He will be discussing the topics below:
- Social media's effect on the modern conceptualization of privacy for its users (both when actively using apps and when the app is not being used)
- Section 230's use for better or worse in what users of said platforms are able to see or post
- Is President Trump's banning from nearly every popular social media site likely the start of a larger movement to chip away at Section 230 rights or to reinforce them?
- How can social media users interact with such sites in the wake of the Capitol riots and what rights do they have to continue such usage without being reported for their crimes or getting banned as well?
- COPPA and how it relates to various popular social media sites/apps, and what controls are in-place to shield younger users from data collection that doesn't apply to those of majority age
- Cancel culture and who do you hold liable? Is it defamation and invasion of privacy to post allegations on social media sites?
