Malta Citizenship by Investment on Pause Due to European Court of Justice Ruling
The European Court of Justice ruled that Malta’s citizenship by investment program must end, as it infringes upon European Union law. The popular program fast-tracked Malta passport issuance in exchange for a minimum investment, allowing for the right to live and work in the EU. The Court stated that transactional nature of acquiring citizenship went against the EU principle of mutual trust among member states.
Malta stated it will abide by its ruling and update provisions of the program in order to comply with the Court and enable the program to continue. Those who have acquired Maltese citizenship through this program in the past are not affected by the ruling.
Maltese Permanent Residency through investment is still available.
