Suspension of Visa Issuance at U.S. Embassy in Colombia
On January 26, 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a suspension of visa issuance at the U.S. Embassy Bogotá consular section. The suspension of visa issuance is in response to President Petro’s refusal to accept two repatriation flights carrying Colombians deported from the U.S.
The order does not appear to bar visa issuance to Colombian nationals at other consular posts outside of Colombia. It also does not appear to restrict travel to the U.S. for the vast majority of Colombian citizens. However, travel sanctions do apply to Colombian government officials and their families who were responsible for the interference of U.S. repatriation flight operations.
Individuals who are impacted by the suspension of visa issuance in Bogotá or other travel restrictions should contact their Pryor Cashman immigration attorney immediately for further guidance.
