Pryor Cashman Partner Erica Allegretta, a member of the firm’s Immigration Group, was profiled in Law.com’s “How I Made Partner” series.

In the Q&A, “How I Made Partner: 'Build Your Personal Brand as an Associate,' Says Erica Allegretta of Pryor Cashman,” Erica shares insights from her career journey, including her path to partnership, key mentors, and the advice she offers to associates with partnership ambitions.

She emphasizes the value of focusing on a specific area of law to develop a reputation as an expert and leader within a firm:

“Build your personal brand as an associate. In other words, find an area of the law within your practice that genuinely interests you or that you particularly enjoy and make yourself an expert within that area…This type of brand management allows you to become indispensable to your practice group and your firm.”

Erica also reflects on one of the most common career missteps she sees among attorneys:

“The most common mistake, and one that I made early on in my career, was the belief that excellent performance within your role as an associate alone would get you recognition and promotions…You must also be seen.”

And when it comes to advice for her younger self, her message is clear:

“To not be afraid…Growth (both personal and professional) comes from pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and doing that which may be more challenging or even scary.”
